C-ROADS as a project

The project ensures the continuity of the C-Roads Platform, supporting the roll-out of harmonised and interoperable Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) across Europe. As part of the project, Member
States undertake to define, discuss and agree on the technical and organisational elements required for the roll-out of harmonised and interoperable C-ITS services. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with deployment projects and industry in general, with a particular focus on the automotive sector.

The C-Roads Platform will develop and publish new sets of harmonised, interoperable and consensus-based C-ITS service specifications, which will be made available for all C-ITS deployment activities across Europe.

Benefits

C-Roads Extended ensures the continuity of the C-Roads platform, with the following main objectives:

  • To link all European C-ITS deployment initiatives. C-Roads Extended, which brings together road transport authorities, road operators and urban organisations, will serve as the platform for discussing organisational and technical aspects with stakeholders in the sector, including the automotive industry.
  • To ensure the interoperability of C-ITS service deployments across Europe.
  • Interoperability at European level will be achieved by working on C-ITS service specifications that are agreed and harmonised at European level. These specifications will be published at least once a year and will be publicly available to enable the compliant and sustainable deployment of interoperable C-ITS services across Europe, based on a common trust domain.
  • Coordinate technical conformity testing to verify interoperability and ensure compliance with technical specifications.
  • Support implementing authorities and infrastructure operators to facilitate the effective and efficient integration of C-ITS services into the overall digital transport infrastructure.
