The Barcelona Innova Lab Mobility (BILM) has opened the call for applications for its 5th edition. This initiative by Barcelona City Council, supported by BIT Habitat and Fira de Barcelona, promotes innovative projects and real-world pilots focused on smart and sustainable mobility. Furthermore, this new edition reinforces the city’s commitment to technological solutions that generate a direct impact on urban life.
A challenge focused on smart traffic light management
This year, the challenge targets a key objective: modernising the traffic light network using artificial intelligence. Through this technology, Barcelona aims to move towards a more efficient and adaptable system. Consequently, the solutions must contribute to:
-
Optimising traffic flow in real time
-
Reducing travel times and emissions
-
Prioritising sustainable and multimodal mobility
-
Improving road safety and the quality of public space
This approach will enable the city to evolve towards a more agile, safe, and environmentally friendly mobility model.
Funding and piloting in a real-world environment
Selected proposals can receive up to €100,000, covering up to 80% of the project’s cost. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to deploy a pilot scheme in a real-world environment in Barcelona. This phase is particularly significant, as it allows the technology to be validated under authentic urban conditions.
Moreover, the projects will feature in the official programme of the Tomorrow.Mobility World Congress, which will be held from 3 to 5 November 2026. This will provide them with international visibility and access to a global innovation ecosystem.
Strategic areas of the challenge
The BILM seeks solutions that deliver value in three main areas. Each of these is essential to ensure the feasibility and scalability of the project:
-
Data infrastructure and integration
-
AI-based decision and optimisation models
-
Scalability and integration with existing infrastructure
Thanks to this structure, the programme encourages robust, applicable proposals that are aligned with the real needs of the city.
An opportunity to drive the mobility of the future
The challenge is aimed at companies, startups, and technology centres specialising in mobility, artificial intelligence, or data analysis. It is also an opportunity for organisations developing innovative urban solutions. In all cases, the goal is to generate a tangible impact on how people move around a large city.
